You Are Going to Die Someday

YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION:  IF YOU WERE TO DIE RIGHT NOW, HOW WOULD YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR LIFE?”

-Tyler Durden (Fight Club 1999)

I think about death every day.  For the majority of my life, death has terrified me more than anything else.  The thought of my own death has brought me indescribable fear and anxiety since my first memories.

I used to zone out from the real world and see blackness, swirling slowly clockwise, and I would feel myself falling into that blackness.  I couldn’t catch my breath and usually snapped back to reality struck with fear and panic.

Recently, I have (consciously) begun to change the way I think about death.  I have made death an important motivator, relevant to every decision I make.

Should I…

  • call my mom, dad, sister, friend or grandparent to see how they are doing?
  • watch another episode of [insert reality tv show]?

You are going to die someday.

  • go lift weights and move toward a healthier lifestyle with improved confidence?
  • sit on facebook for an hour?

You are going to die someday.

  • go say hi to that pretty girl on the street?
  • keep walking because [she might not like me / isn’t that cute / probably has a boyfriend]?

You are going to die someday.

  • save enough cash to quit my soul-sucking job?
  • blow $20/day at a happy hour complaining about my soul-sucking job?

You are going to die someday.

You are going to die someday.

You are going to die someday.

You are going to die someday.  And the people that you love are going to die someday too.  So never hesitate.  Be clutch.  Choose action over inaction every single time – our biggest regrets are the things we did not say or do.  Don’t hold back or leave any stone unturned.  Tell people how you feel about them – especially the people you love.

You are going to die someday.  Make optimal decisions every single day at every opportunity based on your personal values and goals because we only get one shot at life.
